Tips for Ooey Gooey Chex Mix

  • Spray your bowl: Before adding in your mix, it is easier to spray the bowl with a non-stick cooking spray since it gets a little sticky and messy.
  • Large bowl is best: The bigger the bowl the better! If you do not have a large bowl, simply split the Chex mix recipe into two bowls.
  • Stir constantly: When you are boiling the sugar mixture, stir constantly so it does not burn. This mixture does burn easily.
  • Boiling over: The sugar syrup will boil over pretty easily, especially if it’s made in a pan that is too small.  Keep stirring and turn down the heat to medium if you see the syrup start to bubble up.
  • Wooden spoon: I have learned that a wooden spoon is the key to sticky, ooey gooey recipes.
  • Coconut: Some people don’t love coconut; simply leave it out if there is a dislike for it.
  • Make it Gooier: Reduce the amount of cereal by ½-1 cup of each cereal to make your ooey gooey Chex mix even gooier!

Variations of Christmas Chex mix

Here are some fun mix-in ideas and variations for you to try with this simple recipe.

  • Gluten-Free: During the holidays, it is nice to cater to those that are gluten-free. Simply pick out the gluten-free Chex cereal.
  • Nuts: If you don’t have almonds on hand, you can substitute with most nuts. Pecans, walnuts, and cashews are a few I would use.
  • Chocolate: You can add mini chocolate chips or flavored chips to add a fun, sweet treat.
  • Dried Fruit: Cranberries, pineapple, or dried bananas are always a fun, subtle way of adding sweetness.
  • Salty add-in: Pretzels add a great crunch and some added salt to make it more salty and savory.

Storing Ooey Gooey Chex Mix

This is a great make-ahead recipe that everyone loves!

  • Storing ooey gooey Chex mix: This ooey gooey Chex mix is great to store in an airtight container or ziplock bag. It will last about one week stored at room temperature.
  • Can you freeze ooey, gooey Chex mix? This is not the best snack to freeze. It is best made fresh and to leave at room temperature.
  • Do you need to refrigerate ooey, gooey Chex mix? No, this is a great treat and snack at room temperature. If you refrigerate it, it will become hard and not be able to pull apart as easily, and the sugar will start to weep and get sticky.
